As part of the archaeological investigations conducted along the SuedLink route, significant Early Neolithic remains have been uncovered near Mellrichstadt. Archaeologists documented the remains of several longhouses belonging to the Early Linear Pottery Culture (Linearbandkeramik, LBK), one of the earliest farming cultures in Central Europe.
The excavations are being carried out by INFRA JV ahead of the construction works and in close coordination with the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection (Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege, BLfD). The discoveries provide valuable insights into the region's early settlement history while highlighting the importance of archaeological investigations accompanying major infrastructure projects.

SuedLink is one of Germany's most important grid expansion projects, creating the infrastructure needed to transport electricity generated from renewable energy sources efficiently from northern to southern Germany. Archaeological investigations form an integral part of the project. They make it possible to identify previously unknown archaeological remains, document them scientifically, and thereby contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage. The close cooperation between the heritage authorities, archaeological specialists, and the project developers helps ensure that cultural heritage protection and responsible grid expansion go hand in hand.
During a press event held on 7 July 2026, the excavation site and the findings to date were presented to a representative of Main-Post newspaper and to representatives of TransnetBW's Stakeholder Management team. The scientific assessment of the discoveries is being provided by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection.
